Samtidig får han et forhold til den overbeviste kommunisten Nina Skåtøy. Men er det plass for kjærlighet når arbeiderklassen skal seire? Han er som formet for et småborgerlig liv med pent hjem og mønsterfamilie. Knut Pedersen kommer som nyutdannet lektor til Larvik i 1968. Veien til den bekvemme middelklassen synes åpen når han finner kjærligheten i bibliotekaren Lise Tanner. I klasserommet melder imidlertid tvilen seg hos Pedersen. Klassens fremste agitator heter Werner Ludal. Han fremfører sine sosialistiske argumenter så overbevisende at Pedersen snart føler seg tiltrukket av tanken om en "væpna revolusjon" i Norge. Han blir med i lokallaget av AKP (m-l). Partiets lysende ledestjerne er formann Mao, som angivelig har gjort Kina til et idealsamfunn for arbeiderklassen. En dag ankommer en ny "kamerat" Larvik, og siste rest av Pedersens familieliv fordunster. Han innleder et erotisk forhold til turnuslegen Nina Skåtøy, en rettroende superkommunist som har mistet kontakten med familien på Oslos beste vestkant. Nina er så prinsippfast at hun bryter med Pedersen fordi forholdet deres er i strid med partiprogrammet. Pedersen innser, svært halvhjertet, at Nina har rett. Og hun vil gjerne detonere flere politiske bomber for kameratene. Bevegelsen trenger flere som kan identifisere seg med arbeiderklassens kår. Nina, studenten Werner Ludal og flere andre tar seg jobb på fabrikk. Pedersen nøler, og han blir snart sett på som et B-medlem, en kamerat i tvilskamp med sin indre småborger. Klimaet for kommunisme i Norge blir stadig kjøligere. Når også formann Mao dør, og partiet i Kina blir sett på som kriminelt og fascistisk, slutter de røde fanene i Norge å blafre. Flere kamerater forlater bevegelsen. Pedersen holder trassig på troen - både på de røde faner og Nina, men Nina føler at livsoppgaven hennes rakner. En epoke nærmer seg slutten.
